Great Memories of a Childhood UK Activity Holiday – I Think Not
A few evenings ago my family and I were spending a rare night in together. It doesn’t happen very often, and when it does we do like to have a good old giggle.
In a few months time my daughter is off to Spain on a school trip and we were all talking about how much she will be missed whilst she is away – NOT.
Anyway it took me back to my youth and although my school trips weren’t quite so glamorous as Spain, they were a huge part of me growing up.
However a UK short breaks trip was the limit of my very first (and last) school holiday when we visited Wales. Glamorous it wasn’t. As I recall we stayed in some dreadful caravans, which were stuck in the middle of nowhere and had no heating whatsoever. The company the school had booked the holiday with was dubbed as a UK activity holidays specialist. I found out recently that they have now gone out of business, but it really doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. They didn’t have a clue about anything and the activities they planned for us all were atrocious. We had to join in with canoeing on the river and as part of this we had to work out how to turn our canoe over and then bring it upright again. Now this itself was pretty rubbish, but it was the midst of January, so imagine how freezing cold the water was. We also had to take part in mountain climbing. With the mountains being covered in snow and ice, you can imagine how dangerous this was for us youngsters.
At least I know that for her trip to Spain it should be nice and warm. I am really hoping that she doesn’t misbehave too much.
Whilst she is away in the summer I am thinking of returning to Wales for a short break. This time though I will not be staying in some damp and smelly caravan, holiday cottages Wales are my preferred choice of accommodation and I intend to book one with all the mod cons and enjoy all that Wales has to offer me.
